Nothing here asks anything of you.
One a.m. is the hallway.
Every other hour here has already stopped asking. 4 a.m. is a floor. 2 a.m. is a room. Midnight is a door you hold open with your foot. 1 a.m. is the corridor behind it: still lit, still moving, the last bus not yet come, a message you could still answer. It's the one hour that expects something back.
So the rule bends. It was easy to take nothing at 4 a.m., when the night has no demands left. At 1 a.m. the music has to out-ask the night: walk beside you with a pulse and want nothing. Phones face down. The last "u up?" dies on its own.
Warmer than 05, more traffic than abyss. Night-bus reverb, half-lit streets. Past the quiet middle it walks you to the door of 2 a.m.
